National assembly Speaker Franćois Paradis speaks at the end of the 42nd legislature on June 10, 2022, at the legislature in Quebec City. Fourteen elected members of the Quebec national assembly who swore allegiance to the “Quebec people” alone must also take the oath of allegiance to King Charles III, or they will be barred from taking their seats.

François Paradis, the outgoing assembly Speaker who did not seek re-election, has ruled he does not have the power “to dispensate an MNA from a constitutional obligation” to take the oath of the King. As well, the Speaker cannot accept a motion that would allow such members to sit without fulfilling this obligation, Paradis said in a letter to all elected members.
