The prison term should be followed by a period of probation during which El Hmaïni should not be allowed to work with children, the prosecutor said. While testifying Thursday, El Hmaïni said she assaulted the children while trying to get them to settle down at nap time. She said she had worked as a daycare educator for five years by then, but was beginning to lose confidence in herself because of a “toxic atmosphere” at her workplace.
She also mentioned how in Morocco it was normal for teachers to give “a light tap” to students while she was learning in primary school. When she began an internship at a daycare in 2015, she said, she worked with an educator who once “forced a child to take a nap” by giving the child a tap on the head. She said she was shocked by what she witnessed and never struck a child while she worked at the daycare in VIlleray until 2020.
