The Texas Education Agency hired a new school security chief, former U.S. Secret Service agent John Scott, in response to the Uvalde massacre.

The Texas Education Agency rolled out a new online tool Thursday to help school districts access information and grants to help them meet safety requirements aimed at preventing mass shootings. The school “sentinel” program is part of an effort to make Texas a leader nationwide in school safety, Texas’ Chief of School Safety and Security John Scott told Hearst Newspapers in an interview Wednesday.

After Uvalde, Texas promised armed guards in every school. It hasn’t happened. Gov. Greg Abbott created Scott’s position in 2022 to coordinate on school safety policy between the TEA, Abbott’s office and other state agencies following the mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde that left 19 students and two teachers dead. Scott, a former U.S. Secret Service agent, is the first to hold the job.
