Last week’s Council of the Federation meeting of the provincial and territorial premiers included some familiar tunes. There were calls for the federal government to butt out of provincial and territorial jurisdictions, while at the same time asking for more funding for those very areas. Shortly after asking the feds to mind their own business, the premiers then sought to offer their takes on the federal realm of defence.

The incumbent Saskatchewan Party also looks ready to fight a provincial election later this year with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau—not Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck—framed as their primary opponent. That’s similar to the United Conservative Party of Alberta’s ads describing Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi as “Trudeau’s choice for Alberta,” all while seeking to “opt out” of the federal dental care program by 2026.
