At least two Liberal backbenchers are calling for change at the top. The riding became vacant in January after former cabinet minister and MP since 1997 Carolyn Bennett stepped down from her seat. She has since been appointed as Canada’s ambassador to Denmark. With the exception of the 2011 general election, Bennett won this riding by double the number of votes of second-place candidates. The 2011 election was the worst in the Liberal Party’s history, when it was reduced to third place in the House, but still it carried Toronto-St. Paul’s.
