The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot has helped attract 1,130 newcomers, including some to Sault Ste. Marie; program will now run until at least 2024
A government program that attracts skilled immigrants to Northern Ontario will be around for at least two more years.
The geographic boundaries are also expanding for some communities, including North Bay, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Moose Jaw, Sask., West Kootenay, BC, and Vernon, BC. Maps of the new boundaries are available here. The key markers Fraser said the government looks for when making a program permanent is if it's working and if it can be expanded or shifted to make sure the needs of local communities are met.
So far, 1,130 newcomers have arrived in RNIP communities, helping address labour shortages in key sectors. Sault Ste. Marie is one of the 11 participating communities. TEDC community development consultant Madison Mizzau said today's changes are fantastic. "We’re very excited particularly about the boundary extension because that’s something that our regional communities had been advocating for,” she said.
“We were very fortunate that they were able to immerse themselves immediately into our work environment. And we work hard as a company to embrace them and understand their cultural differences to make sure they felt welcomed,” he said.
