The 2023 Gastown Grand Prix will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the event, which has been sponsored and operated by Global Relay, a high-tech firm headquartered in Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, since 2012. “The cycling community is looking forward to having this historic event return this summer,” said race director Mark Ernsting in a statement. “With the inclusion of a youth race before the pro races, the event will continue to inspire the next generation of cyclists.”Article content
The return of the professional Gastown races is a bit of good news following last year’s suspension of, which had included cycling events in Delta, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam and White Rock. Organizers thanked those communities for their support over the years. A spokesperson for the newest city in the series, New Westminster, told local media this week that the event had failed to draw enough support and proved challenging for downtown businesses.
