RNC still searching for third suspect in St. John’s home invasions

JOHN'S, N.L. — Police are still searching for a third suspect after two random, violent home invasions in St. John’s Monday night sent multiple people to hospital, one with serious injuries from being stabbed.
“A random event, certainly of this nature, is very rare,” said RNC Const. James Cadigan in a telephone interview with SaltWire Network on Thursday, Sept. 15. “A random event, certainly of this nature, is very rare. But nonetheless, it is very important to understand there are ways to deter and prevent crime in our communities, and it is very much a community effort.”Cadigan suggested keeping anything valuable out of sight inside the home, and keeping properties well-lit with exterior lighting.
He said everyone should ensure that while they are at home they keep a phone within reach so they can quickly call for help in the case of an emergency.Retired RCMP staff sergeant Boyd Merrill also offered some tips to the public. He suggested ensuring the home is well-lit, doors are locked with deadbolts, windows are locked and curtains are closed, and valuables are kept out of sight.“If somebody’s coming through your front door, you’re going out the back door,” Merrill said.
