Five special\u002Dteams goals, four on the power play in the second half, meant the difference for the reigning NLL champion in an 8\u002D7 thriller
The low score wasn’t unexpected with MVP Del Bianco and ‘The Wall’ Ward guarding the nets and the rivals each sporting solid defences.
The visitors added to their lead in the second quarter with a goal right off the faceoff by Zach Currier, who fended off a defender and ran hard to the net in alone off Chris Willman’s win at the centre dot. It was their first of three goals in the quarter from transition talents, as Jeff Cornwall and Seth Van Schepen — to cap a fantastic loose-ball recovery play by Currier — both got loose for the other Riggers goals of the frame.
Two of those goals came off the stick of veteran Chris Wardle — both on the power play — sandwiched around a quick-stick goal by teammate Eli McLaughlin off Gillies pinpoint pass to the front of the net in transition. That set up quite the fourth-quarter battle, which saw the Riggers flagged for back-to-back-to-back penalties in the final 7:23 from which the Mammoth took advantage with the two Robinson power-play goals.
