Postmedia joins ad boycott of Facebook, Instagram over news blocking
“Our government recently made important steps by passing the Online News Act,” said Andrew MacLeod, President and CEO, Postmedia in a press release. “There is no greater proof of the critical need for this law at this time than the actions taken upon its passing. We hope to work together to ensure that all parties can do what the Online News Act allows for, to bargain fairly, level the playing field and preserve journalism in Canada.
“For us, strategy is an affront to the decision of a democratically elected government, which works in the interest of the Canadian economy,” CEO Michel Leblanc wrote in an open letter. Meta’s initial steps to block news from Facebook and Instagram earned them a rebuke from Rodriguez, who accused Meta of being “unreasonable” and “irresponsible.”
“Unfortunately, the regulatory process is not equipped to make changes to the fundamental features of the legislation that have always been problematic, and so we plan to comply by ending news availability in Canada in the coming weeks,” she said.
