Postmedia joins ad boycott of Facebook, Instagram over news blocking
Postmedia, which owns more than 130 brands in the Canadian news sector, joins all major Quebec media companies, as well as the CBC, that have announced ad boycotts of Meta. Quebecor, La Presse Cogeco and the CBC announced Wednesday they would cease advertising on Facebook and Instagram until Meta agreed to stop blocking Canadian news.
Postmedia said it would not disclose how much it spends on direct advertising with Meta. Direct advertising refers to ads for Postmedia-owned brands, as opposed to ads placed by Postmedia on behalf of its own advertising clients, which will not be part of the pause.Article content In a statement Thursday, Meta spokesperson Lisa Laventure said its news blocking would extend to all Canadian users “in the coming weeks.”
