In the wake of a court action, Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West is defending council’s decision to pass a bylaw aimed at cracking down on “renovictions.”
The building and each of its units need to be vacant for about nine months to allow the renovations to be completed, says 1955 Western Drive Title Corp., the owner of the premises. The owner, which acquired the necessary city permits, filed eviction notices in February. But West said the city went through a “transparent” public hearing process that included submissions from legal representatives of the developer.
