Cape Breton Regional Police police catch, charge man for arson in Sydney Mines.SYDNEY MINES — A 29-year-old man from Sydney River faces charges after a suspicious fire in Sydney Mines.

Cape Breton Regional Police responded to Peppett Street on Friday at approximately 12:30 a.m. to assist the North Sydney Volunteer Fire Department at the scene of a residence on fire. The home was vacant, and officers evacuated the residence next door as a safety precaution. No one was injured. Speaking with neighbourhood residents, police were able to obtain information identifying a suspect vehicle and person at the scene. At approximately 12:45 a.m., officers patrolling the area located a vehicle matching that description travelling on Pleasant Street. Upon stopping the vehicle, officers noted the driver to match descriptions of the person at the scene and he was arrested on suspicion of arson.

After further investigation, with assistance from the forensic identification unit and Fire Marshall’s Office, the man was released on a promise to appear in Sydney provincial court on May 19, when he’ll face a charge of arson — damage to property.
