The Sydney Justice Centre is set to reopen on Monday after the building suffered considerable damage from burst water pipes over the cold snap weather weekend earlier this month. CAPE BRETON POST FILESSYDNEY — Work to repair extensive water damage at the Sydney Justice Centre has been halted after an alleged dispute over insurance coverage.
The flooding was contained to the basement along with the first and second floors. The third, fourth and fifth floors of the building were not damaged. The second floor was home to the administration offices for provincial court, the offices for the judges of the provincial court along with two courtrooms and four small interview rooms. Some 70 workers are employed at the facility.
Administration staff for Supreme and provincial courts are now working out of the barristers' lounge on the fourth floor while counter service for both court levels is located at a seating area near a courtroom. Other staff are now working out of various locations in the building. The issue of mobility is also a concern with the building only serviced by one elevator leaving most staff, where possible, to use the stairway.
