Poland guarantees safe participation of Israeli leaders at Auschwitz anniversary commemorations despite Netanyahu's ICC arrest warrant.
The Polish government has issued a resolution guaranteeing the safe and free participation of Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , at the 80th anniversary commemorations of the liberation of Auschwitz -Birkenau later this month. Netanyahu is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on a warrant issued last year for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Poland , a member of the ICC, is obligated to detain suspects with active warrants, but the court has no enforcement power.
Israel, which is not an ICC member, disputes the court's jurisdiction. While some countries, including France, have stated they won't arrest Netanyahu, Poland's foreign ministry asserts that any notion of Netanyahu's arrest in Poland is 'fake news' and emphasizes Poland's commitment to protecting visiting leaders. The commemoration, attended by international officials and Holocaust survivors, will mark the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp by Soviet forces on January 27, 1945.
