A comprehensive exhibition exploring the history and legacy of Auschwitz, Germany's largest concentration camp, opens at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.
A new exhibition at Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum examines the history and legacy of Auschwitz . The exhibit opens on Friday and will run for nine months. The exhibition, called ' Auschwitz . Not long ago. Not far away.', examines the history and legacy of Germany's largest concentration camp. It is one of the most comprehensive exhibitions ever presented on the Holocaust and includes survivor testimonials, historical documentation and first-hand accounts by emancipating forces.
It also showcases more than 500 original objects — many of which have never been seen before in Canada — on loan from the Auschwitz Memorial and more than 20 other major institutions and private collections around the world. 'As we move further from the Holocaust it becomes easier to think of it as something from the past, but it's very important for understanding the pathway where bias and different forms of racism can lead to hatred, violence and also how to disrupt that,' said Josh Basseches, the museum's director and CEO. The exhibition opens on Jan. 10 — ahead of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on Jan 27. The exhibition runs until Sept. 1
