Recent high-profile plane accidents, including a Delta Air Lines crash in Toronto, have triggered concerns about air travel safety. Psychologists warn that media coverage and public anxieties may lead to a temporary decline in air travel as individuals reassess their risk tolerance.

A recent plane crash at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where a Delta Air Lines plane flipped upon landing, has sparked unease among travelers. Anne Robinson, a passenger whose flight was canceled due to the incident, acknowledged the fear but emphasized her determination to continue flying. Similar anxieties are likely to persist in the coming weeks as several high-profile plane accidents have dominated headlines.

Steve Joordens, a psychology professor at the University of Toronto, explained that these events can lead people to overestimate the risks associated with air travel. While air travel remains statistically one of the safest modes of transportation, Joordens acknowledged that public perception may be swayed by recent events. He cited a study published in the Journal of Air Transport Management that revealed a death risk per boarding of one in 13.7 million between 2018 and 2022. Joordens pointed out that after the September 11 attacks, people's perception of the risk of hijacking was inflated despite statistical evidence to the contrary. The recent crashes, including the Delta incident, a mid-air collision in Washington, D.C., a medical plane crash in Philadelphia, and a regional plane crash in Alaska, have all received significant media attention, potentially amplifying public fear. Joordens believes that background stressors, such as global events and political instability, can further exacerbate these perceptions. He anticipates that business travelers, who frequently fly, may find the coming weeks particularly challenging due to the abundance of video footage depicting these recent accidents circulating on news and social media. Despite concerns, some travelers, like Karen Penseney, remain committed to their travel plans, acknowledging the inherent risks in life but choosing to proceed with caution
