On Sunday, Elections Nova Scotia announced the byelection for the seat, which was vacated by Progressive Conservative MLA Karla McFarlane on April 12.
First elected in 2013, McFarlane won the seat again in 2017 and 2021. She served as minister of L’Nu Affairs, Community Services and minister responsible for the Advisory Council on the Status of Women. She served as interim leader of the Tories in 2018 after Jamie Baillie stepped down as leader.Replacing McFarlane for the Progressive Conversatives on the ticket will be Marco MacLeod of Scotsburn.
MacLeod helps manage a seventh-generation dairy farm and operates a sawmill business. Before returning to the family farm, MacLeod worked as a flight instructor and as a process engineer at Michelin.In the 2021 election, McFarlane received 63.6 per cent of the vote, while Mary Elliott of the Liberals got 21.4 per cent, Rick Parker of the NDP got 12.4 per cent, Clare Brett of the Green party got 1.8 per cent and independent John Clarke got 0.9 per cent.
