Two large wind farms with a combined total of 44 turbines are proposed for the Beaver Mountain area near the border of Antigonish and Pictou counties.
Dubbed the Sugar Maple and Yellow Birch wind energy projects, they would each consist of 22 turbines and have a combined capacity of just under 300 megawatts.If approved, the projects would add significantly to the 616 megawatts of wind production currently installed in Nova Scotia. The provincial government has committed to doubling its wind energy production over the coming years.SWEB is a subsidiary of Austria-based renewable energy developer W.E.B.
The company is hosting a public information session on the projects on Tuesday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph’s Lakeside Community Centre in Antigonish County. According to provincial property records, SWEB Development has secured options to lease hundreds of acres of land on Bouchard Road in Beaver Mountain, Antigonish County, for the purpose of building its wind farms.
