A pick-up truck driver was airlifted to hospital after a crash involving two parked cars outside Alberni District Secondary School in Port Alberni, B.C. Thursday morning. The incident occurred during a busy morning commute as students and staff were arriving at the school.
The Port Alberni Fire Department says the driver of a pick-up truck has been transferred to hospital by helicopter after hitting two parked cars outside a high school in Port Alberni Thursday morning. At around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, Port Alberni Fire asked for oncoming traffic to make way for emergency vehicles in the 4000 block of Roger Street as crews were responding to a motor vehicle incident near Alberni District Secondary School.
Port Alberni Fire told CHEK News that crews received a call at 7:53 a.m. of an MVI (motor vehicle incident) along Roger Street. “A pick-up truck travelling eastbound hit two parked cars and rolled over on its side,” Deputy Fire Chief Travis Cross told CHEK News. By 8:08 a.m., Cross says firefighters extricated the driver of the vehicle and transferred him to BC Emergency Health Services (BC EHS). “From the time we received the call and responded, the patient was out of the vehicle in 15 minutes,” said Cross. According to Cross, once transferred to BC EHS, the driver of the pick-up truck “appeared to be evacuated by helicopter.”‘Busy time’ at school The incident occurred in front of Alberni District Secondary School as students and staff were arriving Thursday morning. “It happened right in front of the high school at a busy time, when everyone was going to school,” said Cross, adding “the first thing we do is secure the scene.” Alberni District Secondary School vice principal Carl Poole told CHEK News that the driver was not a student or family member of a student. He added that it was a “busy time of the day when parents and students are arriving at the school so appreciated everyone’s patience as we directed traffic on an alternate route.” “Thankful for SPR traffic services who came and relieved school staff from directing the traffic,” said Poole. “The accident scene was cleaned up shortly after 9 a.m.”PAFD responding to an MVI in the 4000 block of Roger St. Please make way for responding units
