The Conservatives need a Diefenbaker to remake the party, and need to figure out how to appeal to a constituency that is not necessarily Liberal, but liberal.
At the time, my mother was the campaign secretary for the Progressive Conservative Party candidate in the Ontario town in which we lived, and one morning she took me with her to a big meeting hall.
A year later, in 1957, he did just that, leading the Conservatives to their first electoral victory in 27 years. He held power for six years, and in that time, Diefenbaker brought forth policies that today’s more rabid conservatives might dismiss as “woke.” He enacted the Canadian Bill of Rights. He extended voting rights to First Nations and Inuit people.
I naturally inclined toward the right, and in becoming a columnist I affected the image of a young, old fogey, a George Will-wannabe clad in bow ties and suspenders — fashion statements I now look back on with extreme regret. I looked like I should have been singing in a barbershop quartet.
