A Regional District of Nanaimo Board meeting this week was overflowing with people wanting to see a reduction in proposed tax increases.

.

“Last year it was 13.5 per cent. Over the next five years it’s a 66.9 per cent increase. That’s non-sustainable it’s running at six times the rate of inflation and then you pile on hospital taxes that are going up 246 per cent,” said Wayne Stark with the Northwest Nanoose Bay Residents Association.but what some may not realize is that Regional District taxpayers need to foot the bill for 40 per cent, while the province pays 60 per cent, which mean hospital taxes need to increase.

But she says nothing is set in stone and they’re asking staff to look at what would happen if those hospital taxes were reduced by as much as half. Craig says reducing taxation is challenging because the regional district provides services where every community it serves has the option of joining.
