While you're waiting to fish - and for the snow to melt - two new books to review, including one from the late Donald Hutchens

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOS

Don just recently had a book published. I received my signed copy in the mail just a few weeks ago and I finished reading it just the day before Don passed. I was planning to tell you all about the book this week and had no idea that Don wouldn’t be reading what I had to say.

I’ll leave you with this on Don’s book. This is the dedication section, so it’s in Don’s words: “To my Grandchildren, especially Rebecca and Douglas and to all future generations; may they have the opportunity to enjoy fishing for wild Atlantic salmon in the Rivers of Newfoundland and Labrador.”Columnist Paul Smith is reading “Caddisflies: A Field Guide to Eastern Species for Anglers and Other Naturalists” by Thomas Ames Jr. to improve his match-the-hatch game.

Maybe you didn’t know this. Water density varies with temperature and is most dense at 4 C. This is very significant with respect to what goes on in a pond as it cools before freezing in the fall and warms up in springtime. As water cools at the surface in late autumn, it sinks to the bottom and warmer water from below rises up to replace it. This will continue until the entire pond or lake is cooled to 4 C.

It’s time we take a serious look at whether this closure is justifiable in the present context. I asked DFO and got a written response after a week or so to think about it. They stated that the winter closure is a conservation measure that has been in place for more than 20 years.
