The Canucks’ rookie defenceman looks set to make his NHL debut on Thursday night against the visiting Los Angeles Kings.
When Quinn Hughes first arrived in Vancouver just over two weeks ago, it wasn’t the first time Luke Schenn had seen the diminutive blue-liner.Hughes was eight years old, the son of Jim Hughes, who was the Maple Leafs’ development coach in those days.
“He talks about plays; he’s already mentioned to me that he talks a lot on the ice,” Hughes said about his conversations with the 29-year-old Schenn so far. “I think comms is big. It’s something I’m always trying to work on.” “Ben’s been great with me, same with Tanev … They’ve really been unreal with me. Inviting me to dinners and stuff and making me feel comfortable … asked questions about the NHL and they’ve really helped me.”“I think he’s going to be confident out there; he’s going to make his plays, he’s not going to be shy. I’m excited to see him play,” Hutton said. And coming from college hockey could help him make the transition more easily.
Chychrun, he discovered, had travelled when he was 10 years old with his father to Ottawa to take in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, where the Leafs picked Schenn fifth overall. That gave Schenn pause for thought.
