His entry-level contract has now expired and assuming the Canucks give him a qualifying offer, he’ll be a restricted free agent, with little leverage. He needs waivers to be sent to the minors. Might the Canucks check around to see if there’s a team interested in trading for him? His cap hit is a lot higher than the actual cash due to him over the final three years of his contract, so he could be an appealing trade target for teams that are penny-wise and looking to be cap-compliant, but Eriksson is also allowed to supply a list of 15 teams he would not accept a trade to. Add in the question of whether Olli Juolevi will be ready for NHL action in October and you start to wonder how Hutton fits into the roster equation. A trade seems a strong possibility. His skill set suggests a solid fourth-line centre, but his salary is much higher than you’d expect for the role. It seems likely the Canucks would have to retain a portion of his wage for the remaining two years of his deal if they were to look to move him.
