Good year? Bad year? How did the Canucks stack up against their assignments?

At the beginning of the 2018-19 NHL season, we set out to say what would make for a good or bad season for each Canuck.

Brock Boeser: Another with health concerns coming into the season, Boeser struggled mightily early in the season and was forced to take time off because of groin issues. When he finally found his stride in the second half, he was mostly excellent. Good year. Tyler Motte: The hustling winger kept his coach’s trust, killing penalties and generally going hard on the forecheck. Motte did pot nine goals in fourth-line minutes, but really, his performance is pretty much what you need from a depth forward and those guys are everywhere. Average year.

Jay Beagle: He’s never going to score much and going forward, the Canucks will need to take a hard look at what contending teams actually get from the fourth-line role. But this season, Beagle was exactly as advertised: A good penalty killer, pretty solid defensively, but with little scoring touch. Average year.

Josh Leivo: A fine midseason acquisition, Leivo has seen plenty of top-end ice time and has done well with it, though in the long run he’s better suited to a third-line role. Good year. Chris Tanev: He simply couldn’t stay healthy. Tanev was a defensive rock for the most part, but the key assigned task was “stay healthy.” Bad year.
