It was a poor year for the Canucks’ AHL squad and that’s not good for the future of the Vancouver Canucks.
How your AHL squad does one season can determine how your NHL squad will do three seasons down the line. The Utica Comets, you might have missed, aren’t advancing to the playoffs.
The West Coast Express era Canucks drew well from their minor league team of the day, and so did the Mike Gillis era squad, using players drafted under Dave Nonis. No, there weren’t many players found in the draft under Nonis, but the depth players picked under his watch who made it in the big leagues — like Cory Schneider, Jannik Hansen, Alex Edler, Luc Bourdon, Rick Rypien and Michael Grabner — all spent time in the AHL.
Olli Juolevi’s season was ended by a knee injury, a month or two before he was likely to make the transition to the NHL. That happens. The Canucks still have him in their plans. Beyond Dahlen, a quartet of young forwards, Gadjovich, Lind, Palmu — who went back to Finland, frustrated like Dahlen — and Jasek, had poor years in terms of production and playing time.
