OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says a fuel tanker truck heading eastbound lost control, went into a the concrete wall, rolled over, ruptured and caught fire and exploded beneath the overpass.The two people in the car escaped but both truck drivers died.
The majority of the highway was shut down as a result and caused traffic chaos throughout Pickering, Ajax and even Whitby. The 401 westbound lanes have completely reopened and some of the 401 eastbound express lanes have reopened. At the time this article was published, the Brock Road overpass was still closed. OPP and the coroner’s office wrapped up their investigation on the highway Wednesday and the MTO went to assess the overpass and other damaged roadway infrastructure. Officials say electrical wiring, light poles, drainage, infrastructure, pavement and concrete barriers were all impacted by the crash.
