It happened in the westbound lanes of the highway near Brock Road around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Police say at least three vehicles were involved in the crash, two tanker trucks and a passenger vehicle. They burst into flames following the crash and explosions were reported in the area. The orange glow of the flames were spotted as far away as Oshawa, according to social media posts. The blaze sent heavy, black smoke into the air and it burned for hours, as crews had to wait to knock it down.They also wanted to speak with the occupants of one vehicle involved in the crash who escaped and left the scene.The 401 was shut down in both directions through Pickering. It has partially re-opened eastbound but is still closed westbound. The Brock Road overpass is still closed. Crews have to check it’s structural integrity because it was damaged by the fire below.
