Victoria Police is implementing a new safety strategy over the next six weeks for Pandora Avenue and Ellice Street which is estimated to amount to just under $80,000 in overtime costs.

After the attack, the firefighter and paramedic unions said their members would start waiting for a police escort before responding to calls in the 800, 900 or 1000 block of Pandora. The City of Victoria has since increased its enforcement of its daytime sheltering ban in those blocks, and has asked staff to come back with information on what resources are needed in order to more regularly enforce the ban city-wide.

The first stage is having a dedicated team of foot patrol officers regularly on the 800 and 900 block of Pandora Avenue and 500 block of Ellice Street and other unspecified areas of concern. This is expected to take place over four to six weeks.Sign up for the CHEK Now daily email newsletter to get breaking news and the day's top stories sent to your email.

During previous enforcement of the daytime sheltering ban, one resident living on Pandora Avenue told CHEK News she had been trying to get housing for months unsuccessfully.
