Padres prospect Robert Hassell III has relished an unconventional path that had him rubbing shoulders with big-leaguers before ever playing a minor league game
Robert Hassell III watched one fastball miss the zone, then another. He swung through Dustin May’s next two offerings before getting a piece of the fifth, instilling some bravado in the Padres’ 2020 first-rounder as he searched for footing in his first big-league camp.“I looked up and it was 98 with good movement,” Hassell recalled with a laugh. “I was like, I got this — easy. Then the first slider he flicked to me, took it: Strike 3. … That’s one thing I learned.
It certainly didn’t hurt last year as Hassell parlayed the experience in big league camp, as well as the previous summer at the Padres’ alternate site, into a standout first full year in professional ball. After hitting .303/.393/.470 with 11 homers and 34 steals in moving from low Single-A Lake Elsinore to high Single-A Fort Wayne, Hassell begins the 2022 season ranked No. 30 in Baseball America’s top 100 prospects.
“When I learned that that wasn’t a normal path, it made me shut my mouth more and open my ears more and take it all in.” A baseball junkie, Hassell was naturally all ears when the Padres’ analysts passed along some thoughts on his swing as he settled into the fall instructional league . One suggestion was to tuck in his back elbow to allow his naturally fast hands a better path to the ball.
