CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A youth has been sentenced for his role in four arsons that occurred in Stanhope and Donaldston over a two-day period in November. The youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty on Feb. 23 to five charges – two counts of break and enter to commit arson on Nov. 24 in Donaldston, two more counts of break and enter to commit arson on Nov. 25 in Stanhope, and one charge of arson on Nov. 25 in Scotchfort.

Mullin also spoke about a pre-sentence report that discussed his client's personal circumstances and background information. Mullin noted that his client witnessed domestic violence growing up in the family home. As well, his client has dealt with substance abuse issues involving alcohol, cannabis and other drugs, said Mullin.

Judge Nancy Orr sentenced the youth to a total of five months of open custody to be served at the P.E.I. Youth Centre in Summerside and two-and-a-half months of community supervision. All four offences received that sentence concurrent to each other. The youth was also sentenced to 18 months of probation and was ordered to write letters of apology to the victims. The youth is also required to stay away from the properties during the probation period.

The youth wasn't sentenced for the arson charge that occurred at a home in Scotchfort on Nov. 25. Instead, that matter was referred to the province's restorative justice program. The matter is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. for an update. A 19-year-old co-accused – Dakota James Ellis – is facing the same five charges.
