CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Doug MacLean has worked in management, broadcasting, coached a team in the Stanley Cup Final and built a franchise from the ground up in the NHL.“I never envisioned ever writing a book,” MacLean said at a recent launch of just such a volume, titled"Draft Day," hosted by former Blue Jackets’ radio play-by-play announcer George Matthews of Charlottetown at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall in Charlottetown.
For example, when MacLean was president and general manager, the Columbus Blue Jackets were sitting in a lottery position late in the 2003-04 season before a 6-2 win in Vancouver. “It’s that kind of line in the National Hockey League between being a big winner or a sorry loser,” said Matthews. “I was lucky enough Jill asked me out to a dance when I was in high school,” said MacLean, who accepted the offer. After university, MacLean returned to Summerside and taught at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside for seven years and coached locally with the Prince County Vocational Sharks, Three Oaks Axemen and Summerside Western Capitals’ junior A team, which MacLean described as a dream job.
After MacLean, who coached UNB after the Western Capitals, was fired as an assistant coach in St. Louis, Murray invited MacLean to Washington for an interview. Murray hired MacLean the next night. “It’s still a really special place,” said MacLean, who added MacKenzie and son Clark graduated high school in Columbus. “I wish we would have had more success on the ice.
