ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A wage-support program for small businesses in the province saw so much demand that it had to stop taking applications. She said one of her constituents, a small business owner, tried to apply for the grant shortly after the application process opened.“When she tried to apply online, she found that the application process had been suspended due to overwhelming demand,” Conway Ottenheimer said.

It was estimated that it would help roughly 600 small and medium-sized businesses afford the increased minimum wage through grants valued between $2,500 and $5,000.Labour Minister Bernard Davis said the online application process was open for a little over a week before it was discontined to avoid oversubscribing the program.

“It's very difficult in this economic climate to run a business and to not have to increase the cost of your product, and to manage those prices without affecting the consumer,” she said.Conway Ottenhemer said there are clearly many businesses looking for help from the government.
