The Redblacks are 4-8, just two points behind the 5-7 Lions, who hold the last East playoff spot via the crossover format.
Strong winds and inclement weather cancelled the drone show that was planned for their “Blackout Game” at TD Place on Friday, but the Ottawa Redblacks wouldn’t let the B.C. Lions ruin their season. After yet another feeble start and with the outcome appearing to be doomed, quarterback Dustin Crum orchestrated a dramatic “Crumback” to lead the Redblacks to a 34-33 victory in front of 16,267 disbelieving fans.
The win improved the Redblacks’ record to 4-8 and left them just two points behind the 5-7 Lions, who are currently holding the last playoff spot in the East via the crossover format. The Redblacks’ rally was sparked by Crum’s second touchdown of the game with just over seven minutes left to pull them to within three points. But after a 10-yard sack and head-scratching decision to gamble on third and 20, Ottawa turned the ball over with time winding down. The Lions were in position to salt the game away, but a missed field goal allowed Kalil Pimpleton a 38-yard return to give the Redblacks a glimmer of hope. Crum then hit Pimpleton with a 52-yard bomb to the Lions 10, and followed up with a scoring toss to Eugene Lewis.Trailing 13-3 with just over 10 minutes left in the third quarter, the Redblacks finally made their first big play of the night as CJ Coldon tackled Keon Hatcher while he was trying to make a catch deep in B.C. territory. The ball popped up, allowing Lucas Cormier to dive and grab it just before it hit the ground. On the next play, William Stanback ran five yards to the endzone for a score against his former team. Any momentum Ottawa had was quickly lost when Nathan Rourke followed up by capping a three-play drive with a 51-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Justin McInnis. After the next Redblacks drive stalled, the Lions’ Seven McGee returned a Richie Leone punt 93 yards for a touchdown to put the visitors ahead 27-10. Undaunted, the Redblacks took the next kickoff and strung together a six-play drive – three of which featured Canadian running back Daniel Adeboboye – culminating in a strong, nine-yard TD run up the middle by Crum.Typically conservative play-calling cost the Redblacks a chance to put up early points. On their first drive, they brought the ball to the Lions’ 39-yard line, but on second and four, they chose to hand the ball to William Stanback, who was tackled for a one-yard loss. The Redblacks, who trailed 3-0 when the teams switched ends, have one point in their last six first quarters, and just 21 first-quarter points in 12 games this season. After James Butler scored the game’s first touchdown on a five-yard run with 3:56 left in the second quarter, Ottawa finally ventured deeper than the Lions’ 39 for the first time on its next possession. But on a second and 10 from the 24, Justin Hardy dropped his second pass of the night at the 14, and the Redblacks had to settle for a chip-shot by Ward. The Lions responded by moving the ball 54 yards on nine plays for Sean Whyte to get that field goal back and take a 10-point lead into the intermission.
