Ottawa quarterback Nick Arbuckle had 18 completions for 176 yards in the first half. The passing yards, however, dried up in the second half; Arbuckle finished with 271. Surprisingly, the Alouettes, in the opening 30 minutes, had just eight yards rushing, seven of them from all-star William Stanback. But Montreal changed its game plan in the second half, running for 84 yards and controlling the tempo.

“It was a great start to the game,” said Arbuckle. “We had talked a lot about some of those plays we were going to run and we were excited about it. The double pass was something we’ve been practising since Week 1 of the season and it had just never been called. Finally, getting the opportunity to let those guys do something they’ve been ready to do for a long time was fun.”Article content

After a 55-yard kickoff return by Chandler Worthy, Montreal made it 14-10 on a 23-yard field goal by David Côté. On third down from the Montreal three-yard line, it looked like Ottawa was going to go for the touchdown, but Ward trotted in and booted a field goal to make it 30-24. Asked if he was tempted to gamble, Dyce said: “I wouldn’t say tempted. The way our defence was playing, I felt that we needed those three points. Third and three, I wanted to make sure we took every score we could get. I had confidence we could come down and score again. We took the field goal and I don’t regret it.
