The Ontario Provincial Police have laid 21 charges against an Orillia man in a human trafficking investigation.
Instead, the workers were offered two residences where the sleeping conditions were dirty and inadequate, with many of them sleeping in small spaces or sharing a bed, and receiving partial or no pay.
Police say the accused threatened the workers that if they went to the authorities they would be arrested or deported and also threatened their families’ safety.Article content “Ontario has a higher average annual rate of police-reported human trafficking cases compared to the national average,” said OPP Det. Insp. Jane Conway.
“The victims of human trafficking are often from various communities that are economically and socially disadvantaged and so as we increase the amount of education in the public, we encourage victims from those communities to reach out and get the support in relation to the situations that they’re in.
