Opinion: Yes, let’s help Iranians gain freedom — but without killing them in the process

People walk through a traditional bazaar south of Tehran, Iran, May 8. By Jason Rezaian Jason Rezaian Global Opinions writer Email Bio Follow Global Opinions writer May 17 at 2:39 PM The Trump administration’s top foreign affairs officials are issuing threats against Iran, and the media is suddenly focused on the possibility of a war with the Islamic republic. The regime in Tehran, not to be outdone, makes counterthreats that only fan the rhetorical flames.

Hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives. Murals of many of them adorn public spaces, and throughout the country — in big cities and small towns — streets were renamed after kids who grew up on them and then paid the ultimate price in a battle. Those memorials serve as a constant reminder to survivors of the toll of war.

There is little evidence of Iranians rushing to defend the current regime. But there is equally little evidence that Iranians welcome the form of armed regime change evidently being planned by John Bolton. They simply don’t want war. Such defiance was unfathomable when I arrived in the country in 2009. While women’s demands for fairer treatment have been growing for years, they still have a long way to go.
