These three countries are proving that without economic stability, democracy will falter Opinion by reggcohn
It’s not just invasions that destroy democracies. Sometimes the destruction is self-inflicted.
Pakistan barely survived an extra-constitutional coup attempt this month by Imran Khan, who dissolved Parliament rather than give up his prime ministerial powers in a vote of non-confidence. Perennially on the precipice, Pakistan keeps imploding politically, but the roots of its decline are more economic than ever as runaway inflation further impoverishes its people.
In each country, the problem lies with a body politic unaccustomed to compromise, and political leaders who embody corruption and embrace the populism that breeds polarization. When I first met Khan in Islamabad years ago, he was a charismatic opposition player capitalizing on his past as a cricket star, living down his reputation as a playboy and repurposing himself as a pious Islamist. Khan asked me to hop in his car as he drove me to one of his political rallies packed with admirers, musing to me along the way about the powerful appeal of sports celebrity and the irresistible allure of political Islam.
