The week in politics: Pierre Poilievre leans in as Justin Trudeau pushes back. All the federal parties spent the week recalibrating after the striking Conservative leadership vote handed an overwhelming victory to Poilievre. Opinion by hscoffield
because, as he foreshadowed during the leadership campaign, he did not feel comfortable with Poilievre’s politics.
Tradition would have it that Poilievre would thank him for his service and move on. Instead, Poilievre accused him of quitting because he didn’t want to fight “Justin Trudeau’s inflation.” Soon enough, Rayes’s constituency office and his inbox were flooded with demands for a full resignation from the House of Commons — prompting an apology of sorts from the Conservative party the next day for unbecoming tactics.

It was all a reminder that the history, tradition and respect represented by the 70-year reign of the Queen and commemorated with so much thoughtfulness in the House are an anomaly.shut down for six weeks for MPPs to return to their ridings, heads down, until municipal elections across the province are over.
They’re leaving some unfinished business in the province’s hospitals. The opposition, and many a family with elderly loved ones in hospital waiting for long-term care, are up in arms before the Sept. 21 implementation of Bill 7.
