Tributes to the Queen flowed in the House of Commons Thursday but the debate over the future place of the Crown in Canada’s modern democracy were also front and centre.
, the newly elected leader of the Official Opposition, hailed the Queen as a lifelong servant of the people, and underlined the importance of the Crown in Canada’s system of constitutional governance and its “heritage of freedom.”
But shortly before the tributes began, he too said there would be a time for Canadians to have a conversation about the place of the monarchy in Canada. Before the tributes, Trudeau and Poilievre exchanged brief words across the aisle, and Trudeau began his remarks by congratulating his new political opponent on taking over the leadership of the Official Opposition.Green Party parliamentary leader Elizabeth May did not attend the ceremony, but MP Mike Morrice appeared via video to offer that party’s praise to the Queen’s life of service and duty.Trudeau focused on the Queen’s sense of duty, sacrifice, and love of Canada.
Trudeau spoke of troubling times globally with the pandemic and Putin’s war in Ukraine, and how democratic institutions are being challenged around the world.Canada has “an enviable stability and resilience despite or perhaps because of the vast diversity of beliefs and backgrounds and perspectives.”
