Gregor Chisholm: The Blue Jays’ annual search for starting pitching is in progress
have been in the market for pitching just about every year since general manager Ross Atkins joined the organization in 2015. This off-season will be more of the same.
Last off-season, the Jays made runs at Justin Verlander and Andrew Heaney. Jose Quintana reportedly was under consideration at the deadline, and Mike Clevinger’s ties to this front office dates to its days in Cleveland. Nathan Eovaldi and Jameson Taillon seemed to pitch against the Jays every other week.
Atkins has tried to get ahead of free agency before, and he’ll likely attempt to do so again this year. In 2017, the Jays moved quickly to sign designated hitter Kendrys Morales to a three-year contract. Two off-seasons ago, Robbie Ray was the first guy off the board. Last year, they made an early run at Heaney before he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“We’re just trying to get better, trying to make our team better in any possible way. Feel really good about the foundation and feel good about the opportunities to do so.” The Jays are looking for someone who can be relied upon to stay healthy and eat up a lot of innings. The problem is everyone else happens to be doing the same.
