Gregor Chisholm: The Blue Jays’ next move takes shape in the home of MLB trade talk
There were other moves, too, but those were the ones with long-term implications and while they weren’t necessarily expected at the time, they were at least predictable. Noticeable holes on the roster combined with a large bump in payroll meant weeks of speculation preceded each move.
This isn’t the place where a lot of deals get done, but it is where the groundwork gets laid for future moves, especially trades, and the information that leaks in the days ahead should provide additional clues to what the Jays front office is trying to accomplish. Contending teams typically don’t deal talent off their big-league roster while attempting to improve, but the Jays may prove to be an exception.
Monday’s other developments included star players Xander Bogaerts, Jacob deGrom, Anthony Rizzo and Carlos Correa opting out of their contracts to become free agents. Potential Jays bullpen targets Robert Suárez and Andrew Chafin did the same. Minnesota’s Sonny Gray, Chicago’s Tim Anderson and New York’s Luis Severino had their club options picked up.
Aside from Ohtani and the opt-outs, it was a quiet first day — as expected — in Las Vegas. Assistant GMs from across the league spent the day in meetings, but Atkins and his counterparts won’t begin their official work until Tuesday, part of which will involve an afternoon media availability with reporters.
