Chantal Hébert: Pierre Poilievre is helping Justin Trudeau convince Liberals that their leader isn’t a lame duck

MONTREAL — As the political year comes to an end, none of the federal party leaders is where he or she would like to be, but one is in a better place than many observers predicted 12 months ago.

It is not that he changed his tune. The prime minister has always maintained — as any incumbent must, to avoid turning prematurely into a lame duck — that he planned to stay on beyond his third term.

After a decade in politics, it would come as no surprise if she considered moving on to other challenges in a different arena. On Monday, the Liberal share of the vote in the riding increased from 45 per cent in last year’s election to 51 per cent. The gain was mostly at the NDP’s expense. In a general election, such a pattern would kill any hope of a Conservative win.

It would make more sense to precipitate an election if Trudeau was setting out to move medicare into two-tier territory, something he is obviously not contemplating. It also prompts the question as to what part of the prime minister’s call for more accountability from the provinces on health-care spending the NDP disagrees with.
