But there is another problem that tends to be ignored — paramedic services are facing a major staffing crisis. Based on CUPE’s membership survey, 91 per cent of paramedics say they are understaffed. And we have reached a stage where municipal services are finding it very challenging to recruit and retain workers.

Meanwhile, not enough paramedics are graduating from colleges to fill vacant positions. This is particularly a challenge for services in Northern Ontario, where there are few college programs for paramedics. Thus, improvements in staffing in one region often comes at the expense of another.
