Opinion: People are being priced out of the city and province we love. The More Homes for Everyone Act is an optimistic name for a punitive bill.

Toronto has a housing affordability crisis. Shelters are turning away people in need. Single moms are raising their children in one-bedroom apartments. And families are moving out of Ontario because they can’t afford to buy a home.To increase the construction of new homes, last week Premier Doug Ford introduced a bill that won’t help Ontarians quickly get into a home they can afford.

There is one thing we can all agree on: Ontario needs to build more homes. The province builds about 80,000 new homes a year, when we should be building about 100,000 in order to meet current and future demands. Ford’s legislation does nothing to increase density, even when his own hand-picked Housing Affordability Task Force recommended zoning reform as an important way to build more of the homes we need in neighbourhoods we want to live in.

Everyone should be able to live in a home they can afford to rent or buy. That’s what the NDP stands for.
