Opinion Martin Regg Cohn: Doug Ford sees a problem in surging electricity demand — and an answer in nuclear power

― each the size of a football field ― are planned for the Darlington Station just east of Toronto to power more than 1 million homes.

Within hours of the first news, the doomsayers were having their say ― too risky, too costly, too unnecessary. The antinuke lobby has always viewed radioactive waste as a half-life and death struggle. But when the demand curve is rising in a booming economy ― for private homes and electric vehicles, factories and hospitals ― politicians no longer have the luxury of kicking the can down the road. They have to put a plan in place for increased supply, even if it’s far down the road.

The trouble with solar and wind is that the sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow when needed most in Ontario. Advances in battery storage have helped to reduce the mismatch, but the nature of electricity demand is also changing fast. Cost overruns are a fact of life in the real world, whether you’ve ridden the LRT, recuperated in a hospital, or renovated your home. I don’t hear environmentalists rallying for a moratorium on mass transit merely because the budget of the Eglinton Crosstown is out of control.
