Ford will urge fellow premiers to support a move to let the federal government know it’s important to open up procurement processes so Canadian companies can take part.

WINNIPEG—Ottawa should allow Canada’s Bombardier to bid for a contract for military surveillance planes and not sole source them from U.S.-based Boeing, a concernFord will urge fellow premiers to support a move to let the federal government know it’s important to open up procurement processes so Canadian companies can take part — while making it clear he’s not asking for any special treatment for the Montreal-based company that has plants in Toronto and Mississauga.

“That’s why the premier is urging the federal government to pursue a fair and open procurement process that considers a Canadian solution and supports thousands of high-paying jobs for Ontario workers while ensuring the best product wins.” The federal government has said it is still weighing its options for the multibillion-dollar contract for up to 16 aircraft, and said in a written release that it is “seeking the best value for Canadians and securing economic benefits for industry and communities across Canada.”

The P-8A is used by Canadian allies including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. “The final decision will be based on Canada’s assessment of the offered capability, availability, pricing and benefits to Canadian industry and communities.”
