SYDNEY, N.S. — A community rally is slated for noon on Friday to protest Kameron Coal’s use of public roads to truck coal to and from Donkin Mine day and ...
“The condition of the highway toward Dearns Corner is not bad, but the condition of the mine’s road is not great and from Dearns Corner to Brookside Street is also not very good,” said LeRoy Peach, a Port Morien resident. “It’s all been greatly degraded.
The Cape Breton Post reached out to the Department of Public Works back in December for a progress update on what’s often referred to as a"haul road." A Public Works spokesperson said at the time, “Public Works will complete two intersections to accommodate truck traffic on the haul road. At this time, this work is expected to take place in the next construction season.”
“We actually submitted our appeal to the minister prior to his announcement,” said Tynette Deveaux, the club’s Beyond Coal Atlantic Campaign co-ordinator. “So I’m curious as to whether or not that helped him and his department make that announcement. “If you go to the central database for 2020, which includes the emissions for 2019 for all of Canada, that data shows that the Donkin Mine was the largest emitter of methane gas in the province of Nova Scotia,” Deveaux said. “And that would have been the last year that the mine operated for a full year.
LeRoy Peach of Port Morien:"We do not have the infrastructure that would sustain this kind of overland operation."
