Ontario's Financial Accountability Office (FAO) will investigate the financial impact of the Ford government's decision to allow alcohol sales in convenience stores and other retailers ahead of schedule. The move comes at the request of Ontario Liberals, who claim the early expansion is costing the province billions.
The Financial Accountability Office will examine how much the province is spending to allow early sales of alcohol in convenience stores and other retailers. The move comes at the request of the Ontario Liberals, who say the Ford government is costing the province $1 billion by expanding sales ahead of schedule.Convenience stores and other retailers began selling beer and other alcoholic drinks this month after the Ontario government expanded alcohol sales in the province ahead of schedule.
The original plan was to expand the sales of the beverages to more retailers starting in 2026, when the province's 10-year master framework agreement with The Beer Store expired. The Ontario Liberals estimate the province could be spending more than $1 billion by accelerating the deal.Experts say the early alcohol sales expansion could cost the province hundreds of millions of dollars more than the single payout to The Beer Store.
Premier Doug Ford said Monday that he thinks the early expansion of alcohol sales into convenience stores and other retailers was a great deal for the people of Ontario, and he welcomes the FAO's report. At a campaign stop in Windsor Monday, Ford told reporters the province made a "great deal" for taxpayers. He said the FAO is only looking into the cost of the deal at the prompting of his opposition. As part of its research, the FAO will consider the potential cost of lost revenue for the LCBO.
